Transformation in foster care!
This cutie at day one then only three weeks later with some wonderful foster care..
Those eyes, those ears, that short squishy body…. What more could you want in a dog….. A perfect basset?
Well, they don’t all come that way. It’s the hard work of our foster families that brings unloved, scared, skinny and unsocialized bassets to the point of being loved, secure and healthy. Without our foster homes, we could not help as many hounds as we do. Some of our foster homes focus on medical and nutritional issues, while others concentrate more on their behavior. However, they all work on socialization, which seems to be the biggest issue in the transition process.
Socializing is not always about going to the dog-park to play, or hanging in the backyard….it’s about letting each dog experience the world around them. Bassets are very curious, and when their world is limited, they can become withdrawn and overly shy. This makes for a basset that is harder to place in an adoptive home, because they are fearful. For foster families, socializing is the most challenging, but most rewarding milestone….especially when they experience a break through.
Our foster homes often take in bassets with no medical history or background information. All they know is the sex of the dog. Nonetheless, they concentrate on working through the dog’s insecurity. They learn their personality and quirks. This is critical for selection and placement with a new family.
When asked why they do what they do for the bassets, the answers varied. Success for both the basset and the new family was number one – along with a realization that it touches many more people and dogs than you could imagine. Taking in a dog from a shelter and fostering it opens up a space for another dog to have a chance at a new life. And, there is much joy in rehabilitating (training, healing, socializing) these future guardian angels. Finally, it’s all about love….love for bassets.

We are currently looking for potential foster homes. If you would like to help by opening your home to a dog in need please fill out our application and we will contact you as soon as possible by phone or email. After being approved to foster please submit our foster home agreement contract. All applications should be submitted to [email protected]
